Insights from the Field: 3 Lessons for Today’s Grant Environment

Written by Coco Du | Jun 17, 2026 3:21:11 PM

Over the past several years, I’ve had a front-row seat to how dramatically the grant landscape has evolved. What was once a predictable and routine process, has become more competitive, more relationship-driven, and far more outcomes-focused.

Nonprofits today are not just expected to do meaningful work. We are expected to clearly prove it, differentiate it, and align it with what funders care about most right now. That shift has required all of us to think and operate differently when it comes to grant funding.

Here are three lessons I’ve learned from the field:

1. “Dusting Off Last Year’s Application” No Longer Works

Strong proposals today are not built from recycled language. They are built from real-time insight and collaboration.

Funders want to understand what has changed: What have you learned? How have you adapted? Why does your work matter right now? Answering these questions requires a new lens that brings sharper insight, clearer positioning, and a deeper alignment with a funder’s priorities and focus areas.

At Way to Grow, the most competitive proposals come from deep collaboration. As CEO, I bring perspectives from funder conversations, community voice, and organizational strategy. Our grant writers bring technical expertise and experience to translate that into a compelling, structured narrative.

It is that partnership that makes the difference. When strategy and storytelling come together, proposals are sharper, more relevant, and far more effective.

2. Impact Must Be Clear and Distinct

Many organizations are doing important work. Funders are asking a simple but critical question: Why you?

Clarity is everything. You have to quickly and confidently communicate what sets your work apart:

  • What you do differently
  • Who you serve
  • What outcomes and impact you achieve
  • Why your model works (you love your mission, but why should we care?)

The strongest proposals are not necessarily the longest. They are the clearest. When a funder can immediately understand your impact and your value, you are already ahead.

3. Strategic Prospecting Matters More Than Ever

The funding environment is tighter, and many funders are choosing to go deeper with existing partners rather than expanding their portfolios. That means prospecting must be intentional. It is no longer just about volume. It’s about alignment.

Way to Grow approaches prospecting as an ongoing strategy, not a last-minute task. It involves building relationships, leveraging networks, and staying closely attuned to where funders are focusing on their investments.

Submitting enough proposals still matters, but the strongest results come when that volume is paired with focus, alignment, and a clear strategy.

Final Thought

Funder expectations have fundamentally changed. Grant writing success today does require doing more, but more of what matters. That means sharper strategy, stronger alignment, and greater intentionality in how and where we show up.

The organizations that will stand out are not just working harder; they’re working smarter, with clear focus, meaningful collaboration, and a deep understanding of where they can have the greatest impact.
