Kim, how many years have you been in nonprofit development?
I primarily serve organizations in human services, animal welfare, and healthcare. Many of the organizations I work with focus on domestic and sexual violence services, foster care and aged-out foster youth, human trafficking prevention and recovery, food and housing insecurity, women and children, substance use prevention, and community health initiatives.
What are your specialties?
My specialties include federal grants, foundation grants, and corporate grant funding. I have extensive experience helping organizations strengthen grant readiness, diversify funding streams, and develop strategic approaches to sustainable growth. I especially enjoy helping mission-driven organizations turn complex needs into compelling, fundable stories supported by strong data and measurable outcomes.
What is your favorite part of work?
My favorite part of this work is helping organizations realize what is possible. I love watching nonprofit leaders move from feeling overwhelmed or under-resourced to feeling confident, strategic, and hopeful about their future. Knowing that successful funding can directly impact survivors, children, families, animals, and vulnerable
communities is incredibly meaningful to me.
What inspired you to become a grant writer?
My path into grant writing grew naturally from years of working inside nonprofits and seeing firsthand how critical funding is to mission success. I realized that many incredible organizations were doing life-changing work but struggling to communicate their impact in a way funders could clearly understand. I wanted to become a bridge between powerful missions and the resources needed to sustain them.
Is there a grant success story that has stayed with you?
The most meaningful experiences for me have been securing tens of millions of dollars for organizations serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence and human trafficking, which has directly expanded crisis response services and safe housing support. Knowing that grant funding can literally provide safety, stability, and hope during someone’s darkest moment is something I never take lightly. Those successes stay with me because they represent real people whose lives have changed.
One of the biggest mistakes nonprofits make is approaching grants transactionally instead of strategically and relationally. Too often, organizations pursue every funding opportunity without ensuring the request truly aligns with their mission, organizational capacity, and long-term goals.
I also believe many nonprofits underestimate the importance of relationship building with foundations and community foundations. Grant reports are important, but meaningful communication between reporting periods is what truly cultivates strong partnerships. Keeping funders informed about successes, challenges, and impact helps build trust, which often leads to larger awards, renewed support, and long-term funding relationships.
What kind of nonprofit organizations are the best fit for Fox Grants?
Organizations that are mission-driven, collaborative, open to strategy, and willing to invest in long-term growth are the best fit. The strongest partnerships happen when nonprofit leaders are passionate about their mission and willing to evaluate systems, strengthen infrastructure, and develop sustainable grant strategies.
Some of my favorite books are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith, I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb, and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. I’m drawn to stories about resilience, humanity, survival, and hope.
For podcasts, I enjoy The Biz of Nonprofit Consultants for business development and Hope for Right Now, which feeds my soul.
